The LoN servers are being shut down on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Noon Pacific Time.

To redeem your loot cards, you must download and install the LoN standalone client from the Legends of Norrath site. Log in using your Daybreak account(s), and go into the Collection area to find any unopened packs or unredeemed loot cards. Right-click and redeem any that you have before the server shuts down.
If you have choose-a-packs, you can see what loot cards are available in each set on the LoN website, in the sidebar under 'Card Sets' (click the link after each set that says [Loot Cards])
I'm assuming that you don't have to '/claim' the items in EQ/EQ2 as long as you've redeemed the card from the LoN client, so you can hold off on deciding which character gets the stuff.
It's a shame they won't leave the service running, even if it doesn't get continued development, but I guess switching over the last few bits of code that point to SOE instead of Daybreak isn't worth the time.

Original LoN Review[edit]
Legends of Norrath, the EverQuest and EverQuest II based trading card game, is now live and going strong. The game is accessible either by using a tab within both EverQuest games, or by launching the LoN stand-alone client, which can be downloaded from the Legends of Norrath website. Recently I spoke with Paul Dennen, Senior Game Designer for SOE Denver, where the game is produced, about the LoN launch and what players can expect in the future.
With a robust initial card collection of over 375 cards, sophisticated play strategy, and character enhancing loot cards for EverQuest and EverQuestII, LoN is showing itself to be a valuable addition to SOE’s product line. The cards are beautifully illustrated and even the music that accompanies the game is interesting. The card designs all draw on the EverQuest universe, and do not disappoint with the appearance of famous NPC characters, spells, and Norrathian monsters. EQ players will recognize the names some of the currently popular cards for deck builds: 'Flowing Black Silk Sash,' 'Divine Aura,' and 'Journeyman's Boots.' Other cards include the characters Firiona Vie, Lucan D'Vere, and Lord Nagafen.
“Easy to learn, challenging to master” seems to be the design idea for this solid strategy-based game, which provides fun for beginner players as well as challenges in deck building and strategy for hard-core TCG fans. The EverQuest universe gave the LoN developers years of lore and characters to work with for their card designs. “We were given the liberty to come up with our own story,” Dennen said, “so we based [the game play] on a sworn oath to The Tribunal in the Plane of Justice.” According to the official website, the story involves players becoming part of a clandestine war between the forces of Order and Chaos. Jailed on the Plane of Justice, a mysterious tribunal offers the player a chance for freedom and redemption by fighting against the forces of Chaos. By swearing allegiance to the cause of Order, players become Oathbound, and fight secretly to prevent Norrath from plunging into a bloody war.

Legends of Norrath was specifically designed to be a digital trading card game experience, and has elements that make it unique to the TCG genre. For many of these types of games, it’s all about beating up your opponent. LoN certainly follows in the tradition of player beatdown deck builds, but players can also complete lore-driven quests within the game to win, or play a single-player series of scenarios, which add special elements and cards within the game play.

The addition of quest lines are a key element in the game and 'add a new kind of victory condition,” Dennen said. Quest lines allow players to employ a different kind of strategy, using tricks and wiles to get around combat.
Adding a further level of complexity, LoN has introduced faction into the card game. Players can choose to use light (good), dark (evil), or neutral cards as they play. Once a faction has been chosen, the player gains various benefits and abilities from using a light or dark card choice. This extra dimension of play adds interest and gives the game an EverQuest feel.
The game's unique elements and depth are a result of a team of strong game designers. Paul Dennen came to the LoN team with years of experience in TCG design. He started his own company, Nayantara Studios, to design and produce Star Chamber, a hybrid of a trading card game and a turn-based strategy game (now distributed by SOE, it’s available in the SOE Station store). He then joined Worlds Apart Productions, the industry leader in digital trading card games. His other TCG titles include Stargate and Auto Assault.
So what makes a good TCG? Dennen gave me some insight into how a successful TCG works. LoN’s cards, like those of other TCGs, are designed to combine simple elements to create an end result greater than its parts. Successful deck builds spawn game turns that “create a synergistic combination,” he said, “surprising your opponent with atomic cards that come together to create powerful effects.” Single effects come on common cards, with effects that are hardest to use appearing on rare cards, making for good balance and sophisticated deck builds.
The innovation of introducing a robust game into an already established MMO was a gamble, but so far seems to have paid off. The addition of loot cards for the EverQuests broke new ground, integrating card playing and MMO, creating a new digital experience players haven’t seen before. The addition of LoN starter decks and loot cards dropping as rare loot in both EQ and EQII promotes the relationship between the two games and has done some interesting things to the economy, with rare loot cards selling for high amounts of platinum in both games.
If a recent tournament stress test is any indication, a lot of people are already playing the game. “We expected maybe hundreds of people to enter the tournament, but when I saw the number of players go over 1000, I just said wow,” Dennen said. There has been some concern from both EQ player bases that the loot cards might unbalance game play, but Dennen reassured me that the loot cards were intended to be cosmetic, not game changing.
The complexity of the game should not deter players of any level of interest to give it a try. Choices in the type of game play are an important component in the design, Dennen said. Legends of Norrath has the depth to satisfy hard core players who expect a TCG to have exciting strategy play with killer card combinations, yet is accessible for the casual player to enjoy an occasional match up in the lobby, he explained. There are single player games, casual games, and more serious tournament challenges. “It’s all about balance,” Dennen said. “It feels cool to be able to have a choice on how to play. You can play the single player game with the scenarios, or try a casual game in the lobby, or work toward a greater understanding of the game and enter tournaments.”
If you are new to the game, start with the Tutorial, now called The Training Grounds, which Dennen pointed out has been greatly improved since the beta, when many EQ and EQII players tried it for the first time. If you found the tutorial a little confusing early on, try it again, he suggested. After you have learned to play, you can head over to the Casual Games Lobby and try out your new skills.
The solo experience consists of challenging encounters with the game's A.I., The Seventh Hammer, or the completion of a set of scenarios. The single player game option is not the primary focus of LoN –- that would be the metagame where players challenge one another -- but does allow players to get their feet wet and start to explore some of the strategic possibilities of the game. By playing the scenarios, players not only learn the game, but gain cards for their decks when they complete their tasks. If you haven’t played TCG games before, the single player option can be a good place to start.
Players can expect another card set to come out in mid-December, just in time for the holidays. This set will continue the theme of the story from Oathbound. Designed as an “expansion,” this set will be smaller than the initial launch set, but will include ten new scenarios. The design team plans on creating more opportunities in the future for cooperative play, so the new set will include more cooperative elements. The idea is to attract a diverse audience of players by offering many ways to enjoy the game.
Legends of Norrath is a great way to try a strategy based card game if you are new to the genre. The barrier to entry is low so it’s easy to start, and with a free deck of cards EverQuest players are good to go. The booster packs are relatively inexpensive if you care to expand your card collection, and the trading lobby is always busy with people exchanging cards. Both for those down-time situations in game and as an entertaining independent game, it appears that LoN is a worthwhile way to spend your time. - Kwill
